What does a dentist check during gum assessment or examination?

Presence of lumps or other abnormal raised areas in the mouth.
Look for the amount of plaque build-up on your teeth.

Assess the colour, size, shape, and texture of your gums.
Appraise the existing dental fillings, crowns, dentures, implants or bridges.
Check the pocket depth, which is the space between your tooth and gum.

Assessing the pocket depth helps diagnose three states: healthy gums, gingivitis or periodontitis.
